Denver Metro Hunts
Orienteering MapHere is the Topo Map that was used recently at an orienteering exercise near Nederland. Larry Benko submitted it as an excellent example of the type of map you would probably be issued at an ARDF meet. This map is a lower resolution version of the map Larry offered to distribute. While there are fewer pixels, the general printing characteristics (height and width) have been preserved from the original to keep the scaling close to correct. Larry's original 2.7 meg scan is below. It is more detailed (higher resolution) and the scaling is slightly more accurate.
Click on this link to download the 2.7 megabyte image. This one will print out at the correct size to conform to the scale indicated on the upper right corner of the map. You must print at 100% and not "fit to page" to preserve the scaling factor. The vertical lines on the map are magnetic (not true) north and spaced 500m apart.
General InfoRegular hunts are scheduled on the 2nd Sunday of each Month. The starting time is at 3 PM during Mountain Standard Time (October through April) and 5 PM during Mountain Daylight Savings Time (April through October). A reminder announcement is automatically sent from the "RDF_Colorado" Yahoo email list to subscribed members. The fox will often send out any special information the hunters might require via this list. CLICK HERE to go to the home page of this website to find a link to join the RDF_Colorado email list. Standard Frequencies Used during Denver Metro Hunts
Where Do We Start?
Starting point for regular monthly hunts is on the west side of Loretto Heights College. This is North of Hampden and West of Federal Blvd. Take Federal Blvd. north from Hampden (US 285) to Amherst, which is just north of the Teikyo Loretto Heights College campus (approximately 3/4 mile). Turn west (left) on Amherst and proceed to Irving St. On Irving head south (left). Irving snakes south and to the west. At the top of the hill you'll see a park on your right (to the west). This is the starting point and you should see other cars equipped with DFing equipment.
Who Can ParticipateEveryone is welcome to come out and join us. Newcomers are especially welcome. It is suggested that new aspirants to foxhunting monitor the 146.880 MHz repeater in the Denver area. The following hams are regular fox hunters and should be glad to answer any questions you may have:
This web page is slightly old and many new faces have become strongly involved in the Denver area hunts. If you wish to offer your services as an "Elmer", contact me through the email link at the bottom of the page, and I will add your name and repeater frequency where you usually "hang out". I'll post email address for folks if you wish, but don't forget about all the spam bots that troll web pages.
RecapsOccasionally someone posts recaps of the hunts. Go to the recap page to see what's available. Your recap of a hunt is most welcome. Send in a story, photos, whatever and I'll whip it into web shape and added it to the recaps.
Instructional or Practice HuntsPractice hunts designed to help newcomers are held on an irregular basis. These hunts are usually of the easy category and offer the novice hunter the opportunity to observe other hunters in action. This can be quite instructive if you've never been out on a hunt before. Everyone exchanges hints and tips freely unlike the "Dog eat Dog" monthly hunts where you're more likely to get disinformation from someone hoping to direct you to Kansas while they zoom in to win the hunt. ;-) . |
