Lexus RX400h Early Data

The car is currently only 62 days (last fill) into its life. However I decided to post some initial numbers for those of you interested in this car's real world MPG. Although it isn't a particularly new car, I didn't turn up much info of this kind on the web. Perhaps this will be of assistance to someone who's making a buying decision.

Points to keep in mind:

I live in Elbert County Colorado, so the car is generally being driven at an elevation of 5280 (or more) feet ASL.

From my home to ANYTHING is 10 miles. Go to the store, come home, you just dropped 20 miles on the car. I put lots of miles on a car in a fairly short period of time.

The Lexus RX400h has a trip computer which keeps track of several factors. I use some of them in the spread sheet.

bulletTrip Odometer. I use this but the actual car odometer is used for most computations. So, I guess this is just a test of my recording accuracy. You will find an instance or two where the master odometer and the trip odometer generate different mileages. Chalk this up to my forgetting to immediately reset the trip counter at a fill up.
bulletMiles per Gallon
bulletCurrent MPG (I don't use this anywhere as it is just a snapshot of gas mileage at any given instant. Go uphill it decreases coast downhill it increases.)
bulletMPG since last fill-up - This is the value in the spread sheet
bulletOverall MPG - A running MPG that can be reset. This is the value in the spread sheet and I reset this data point at each fill-up.

Here are some preliminary numbers:

Car Purchased on: February 28, 2007
Last Fill-Up on: May 2, 2007
Total Mileage:
6031
Total Spent on Gas: $606.51
Total Gallons: 219.348
Average $/Gal: $2.77
Max $/gal: $3.149
Min $/gal: $2.499
Average MPH: not available
Average Miles Per Day 100.908
Avg MPG: 27.52

Here's the MPG chart

Here is the Excel spread sheet with all the data:

Overall I am very satisfied with the MPG. It is really fun to crawl in a traffic jam and watch your MPG climb up and up. Likewise, when I go into the mountains it is interesting to watch MPG decrease while climbing up the hills but phenomenally decrease on the trip down. Climbing up the hills I usually get around 25 sometimes 26 mpg but coming down, I run a strong 33 to 35 MPG. And that is average from someplace in Summit county where I fill up down to the flatlands. Once I start driving on level terra firma the mileage starts to drop off to the high 20s again but that long ride down from the Eisenhower tunnel you hardly need the engine.

This page may be updated once a year or so. But the data is constantly being accumulated so if you are reading this and want to see how the car has done since this posting (May, 2007) then drop me a line and I'll update the page.
